Your wedding day is the ultimate test of makeup’s staying power. And your wedding makeup look needs to last for hours — and hold up to hours of photos, dancing, plenty of kisses and maybe a few (happy) tears. Whether or not you plan to hire a professional makeup artist, you’ll need to plan and prep for a stay-all-day makeup routine. Here, the products and techniques you’ll need for a wedding-day makeup look that lasts from first kiss to last dance.
Cleanse your face thoroughly before applying makeup. Getting rid of dirt, oils and dead skin cells helps makeup stay on longer. Use a gentle exfoliator and follow up with an oil-free moisturizer.
Prime, prime, prime. Aface primer helps fill in pores, reduces the appearance of lines and brightens up skin. It also helps lock in your makeup. But use it sparingly; you only need a raisin-size dollop. Smooth it on skin with your fingers before your foundation and powder. (Smashbox’s Photo Finish gel foundation primer is a popular choice. Buy it here!) An eye primer help to keep eye shadow from creasing, and a lip primer keeps lipstick in place.
Apply your makeup in very thin layers and use the proper tools. Let each layer set thoroughly before reapplying. Use a foundation brush to apply your foundation, and then set it with powder using a powder brush.
Use waterproof mascara. After curling your lashes, apply a layer of mascara. Let dry and then reapply. This L’Oreal waterproof mascara is a budget-friendly — and smudge-free! — choice.
For lipstick, begin with lip liner. Line and fill in your lips completely with the liner, and then apply lipstick. Blot your lips and apply another layer of lipstick. Pro tip: The oils in lip balm will make lip liners and lipsticks smear and rub off easily, so swipe on ChapStick before you shower so that it has time to absorb by the time you begin your makeup routine.
Come prepared! Don’t forget to bring a touch-up kit. Bring lipstick, a waterproof eyeliner, blotting papers to get rid of any mid-day oily areas, a small tube of concealer, Q-tips for touchups, and lash adhesive if you’re getting false eyelashes for your wedding.
